WaBAM Update – November 2008

November Group Ride – this Sunday - 16th

The group ride in November will be lead by yours truly. It is likely to skirt around Swindon, sweep through Wantage, drop down to Newbury, plummet to Andover and then meander back to Chippenham via Pewsey – ish!. Meet at the Mermaid at 9am for a 9:30 start. Breakfast from 8am if you fancy a sarny or fry up. Don’t forget to fill up your tank beforehand.

Social Gathering – 18th November

The Mermaid pub on the 3rd Tuesday of the month is proving very popular, with a really good turnout since we moved venue. The landlord and landlady have made us very welcome, so why not join us next week for a natter.

WaBAM Christmas Bash - Saturday 13th December

This years Christmas bash will be a skittles evening at the Royal Oak, Widcombe, Bath, on Saturday 13th December @ 7:30pm. The whole evening, including a buffet is £7 per head – bargain! Please send completed forms and cheques (made payable to WaBAM) to Nigel Lavender ASAP. Click HERE for the info.

Pinkertons Toy Run – Swindon – 13th December – bring a toy

We have been invited to join the annual Pinkertons Toy Run on Saturday 13th December, mustering at the rugby club (Greenbridge Road, Swindon) from 10am onwards for bacon butties & coffee. The run will leave the rugby club at 12 noon and ride around the town (usually with a police escort) to the Great Western Hospital where the gifts will be donated to the children. (All donated gifts to be left unwrapped) - There will also be a party at the rugby club that evening from 8pm.

December Group Ride – Sunday 21st

The December group ride will take place on Sunday 21st, starting at the Mermaid. Bill Ferrol is currently in the frame to lead, possibly up into the wilds of Oxfordshire.

Trip to the Catalunya Moto-GP – June 2009

Important Note - IAM & WaBAM Membership

You are no doubt aware of the proposed increase in the IAM annual membership fee, which will be voted on at the IAM AGM later this month. If, as a result of the increase you decide not to renew your IAM membership, it is important to know that you will not be able to remain a member of WaBAM after your IAM membership expires. This is a standard rule for all IAM groups across the UK.

Clearly we do not want to lose WaBAM members, so if you feel strongly about the proposed increase, full members are invited to vote at the AGM by proxy – see WaBAM forum for details.

Committee Minutes

You may not be aware, but the WaBAM committee meets once a month to ensure the activities of the group are run effectively in support of our key aim, which is to improve motorcycle road safety in our area. We are also keen to provide other activities that benefit members and encourage new people into the group.

WaBAM Update – October 2008     

  

Mermaid a Success

The Mermaid pub Social on the 3^rd Tuesday of the month is proving far more popular than our previous venue.  We’ve had a really good turnout since we moved venue and the landlord and landlady at the Mermaid have made us very welcome.

Why not come along to the next social evening on Tuesday 18^th November.

New Meeting Place for Group Rides – The Mermaid

Due to the popularity of the Mermaid, we have decided to take the landlord up on his offer to start our group rides there on the 3^rd Sunday of each month.  Freshly cooked breakfasts will be available between 8am and 9am as follows:

 

·        £5.50 for a full brecky

·        £2.50 for bacon or sausage sarny

·        £1 for mug of tea

 

This is a trial arrangement from November to February, just ensure you have a full tank of fuel before turning up. 

 

Group Ride – Sunday 16^th November

The group ride in November will be lead by yours truly.  Not sure where to yet, but I will devise a route that introduces some interesting roads that aren’t too far from home.  Meet at the Mermaid at 9am for a 9:30 start.  Don’t forget to fill up beforehand.

The WaBAM Forum

All members and associates should now have access to the forum on the WaBAM web site.  So if you have been provided with a user name and password, why not have a go at using the forum to keep abreast of what’s going on (all of our events are listed there), and have your say.  The more people who use it, the more useful and interesting it will become.

WaBAM Update – August 2008      

 

New Rides Co-ordinator

We are pleased to announce that WaBAM has a new Group Rides Co-ordinator.  Phil Ellis has recently joined the committee and will take over the sterling work previously carried out by Rob Blackburn and Nick Atkins.  It’s great to have new blood in the committee and Phil plans to review group rides over the coming year.  So if you have any suggestions (evening runs, race events etc) Phil would like to hear from you. 

As always, if you have a favourite route or destination in mind and fancy leading a group ride, we will provide all the necessary support and guidance to make it a stress free and enjoyable experience.

 Proposals to Increase IAM Membership Fees

You may have read in the latest copy of the IAM magazine that they are considering increasing the annual membership fee to £30 (£28 for people paying by direct debit).  The committee would be very interested to hear your views about this proposal. 

 

You can either e-mail me, or post your views on the forum, where a thread has already been started under ‘Latest News’.

 

 

Group Ride – Sunday 21^st September

The group ride in September will be lead by Peter Hawkes, who is going to take us on one of his Adjectivally Mystic Tours - and knowing his routes it will be awe-inspiring.

 

Starting from the usual place – usual time.  Keep your eye on the WaBAM website for details.

 

 

Weston-Super-Mare Beach Race – Sunday 12^th October – a week early

The October group ride will be a week early – 2^nd Sunday.  It will depart from the normal meeting place and head to Weston-Super-Mare for the annual beach race, which starts at 12:00.  Chips, mud and sand castles - SPLAT!!

 

 

The WaBAM Forum

Nigel has been busy creating user accounts so that all members have access to and can use the forum on the WaBAM web site.  So if you have been provided with a user name and pass-word, why not have a go at using the forum to keep abreast of what’s going on (all of our events are listed there),

and have your say.  The more people who use it, the more useful and interesting it will become.  

 

 

Don’t Forget!  -  Monthly Social – Change of Venue & Day of the Week

We have now formally moved the venue for our monthly social gathering to the Mermaid pub in Christian Malford.  It’s opposite the Mermaid Farm on the B4069 between Chippenham and Lyneham - click here fo location details.

 

We’ve also changed the day so it’s now on the 3^rd Tuesday of every month at 8pm.  There is plenty of parking and good quality pub grub is also available.  The pub owner is very keen to attract biking groups, so we will see how we get on there over the coming months. 

 

We believe that Tuesday is a more convenient evening and will therefore encourage more members to attend.  As always, we would welcome your feedback.

WaBAM Update – July 2008           

 

 

IAM National Award for Martyn Buckland

Congratulations are in order for Martyn Buckland, who was presented with the Strathcarron award at the recent IAM AGM.  The press release is as follows:

 

Martyn Buckland, the first Chairman of Wilts and Bath Advanced Motorcyclists, has won the inaugural Strathcarron Award, given to the IAM member considered to have done the most to promote advanced motorcycling during the year.  The presentation was made at the Institute of Advanced Motorists Annual Motorcycle Conference held on 28 June at the Rootes Building of Warwick University.  

 

The award is named after Lord Strathcarron, who died on 31 August 2006.  He was a notable figure in both motorcycling and motor journalism and amongst many other contributions, as Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Motorcycle Group he helped to create the modern basic training system introduced in 1990. 

 

Martyn said:

"It is a fantastic honour to be given this award.  I'd like to thank everyone I've worked with during my time in the IAM, as without them and their infectious enthusiasm, this would have never happened.  Motorcyclists are a great bunch of people - IAM motorcyclists are special.  If you have a passion for motorcycling and developing your skills as a motorcyclist, you can do no better than to join your local IAM Group."

IAM National Award for WaBAM

At the same conference, WaBAM received its second Group Achievement Award.  This nation-wide competition is open to more than 200 IAM groups and reflects the work done by those groups considered to have contributed most towards safety and the principles of the IAM during the past 12 months.  WABAM’s receipt of a second such award in its first three years of existence is remarkable.  So a big thank you to all those who have put so much into the group, contributing to our continued success.

 

Calne Bike Day – this Saturday - 19^th July

WaBAM will be formally attending this annual event, using our own stall, with the aim of promoting the group and attracting some new associates.

Entry is free for this event, which sees Calne taken over for the whole day by hundreds of motorcycle enthusiasts, of all ages, with lots of classic bikes on show.  There will be plenty of food and entertainment laid on, so why not bring the whole family?

 

Group Ride – this Sunday - 20^th July

This will be a combined ride with the local RAT group.  Meet at the Chippenham Little Chef at 09:00 for 9:30 prompt start.

The ride will go to the Sammy Miller museum in New Milton where there is a demonstration of speedway bikes.  This is an interesting bike museum in its own right, so if you haven’t been there, here’s a great opportunity.  Food and drink available on-site.

 

NEW!  -  Monthly Social – Change of Venue & Day of the Week

Sadly the King Alfred, although centrally located for members living in both Bath & Swindon, has gone downhill. This, combined with dwindling attendance has resulted in a move to a new venue for our regular social gatherings – namely the Mermaid pub in Christian Malford.  It’s opposite the Mermaid Farm on the B4069 between Chippenham and Lyneham - click here to see our new social location and to get a map.

 

We plan to meet at the Mermaid on Saturday 3^rd August for our final Saturday meeting. 

 

Thereafter, we will meet there on the 3^rd Tuesday of every month at 8pm.  The first of these Tuesday gatherings will be on 19^th August.  There is plenty of parking and wholesome pub grub is available.  The pub owner is very keen to attract biking groups, so we will see how we get on there over the coming months.

 

We hope that Tuesdays will be a more convenient evening that will encourage more members to attend.  It would be great to see you at the Mermaid soon.

 

 

WaBAM Annual B-B-Q – Saturday 16th August

Martyn Buckland has very generously offered to pay for members who attend this year’s B-B-Q, between 3pm - 6pm at the ‘Inn on the Green’, Broughton Gifford - click link to see map.

In order to gauge how much food to prepare, please let Nigel Lavender (nflavender(a)yahoo.co.uk - 01373 453935) know by 1^st August if you plan to attend. Please don't just turn up on the day and expect to be fed! 

If you would like to bring guests, they can be accommodated at a cost of £6 for adults and £3 for children under 16.

August Group Ride – 17^th August (now not followed by a B-B-Q)

The group ride in August will be a half-day affair, starting from the usual place – usual time.  Nick Atkins is planning a route that will allow people with limited time available to complete a shorter ride. Its about 120 miles taking 3.75 hours terminating at the Mermaid for lunch. Please contact Nick (atkinsnr(a)btinternet.com) to let him know if you are coming so that he can call the Mermaid to let them know numbers. See the Events page for details and maps.

WaBAM Update – June 2008

 

 

Group Ride – Sunday 15^th June

it's Father's day! - So what better present can your 'missus and kids give you than to let you go for a cracking ride in Wales!

The June ride will be led by Nick Atkins. It’s a long one leaving from the old M48 "Aust" services at 08:30 prompt, and is not one for the "faint hearted".

The route will run roughly from Aust up to Llanidloes, across to Machynlleth, down to Devils Bridge (Hafod Hotel) for lunch, then home via the Elan Valley, and a wiggly bit to Brecon.

BMF Southwest – 21^st & 22^nd June

WaBAM is attending this new motorcycle show at the Bath & West Showground, helping out on the regional IAM stand with the aim of attracting some new associates to the group.

WaBAM members have been invited to take part in the Tour de Wiltshire 2008 - The Follies and Fords Run & Social, organised by the Wiltshire Trail Riders Fellowship, in aid of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

There are three classes, one of which is suitable for bikes fitted with road tyres, but if you have a tailie tucked away in your garage, then perhaps you could be a bit more adventurous!

July Social – Saturday 5th @ 8pm

The July group ride will tie up with the local RAT group who are planning a trip down to the Sammy Miller museum where a motorcycle event is being held.

 

WaBAM Annual Bar-B-Q – Saturday 16th August

Martyn Buckland has very generously offered to foot the bill for this years B-B-Q, but you will have to buy your own drinks.  Please note there will not be a ride immediately before the event (see below).

The B-B-Q will take place between 3pm - 6pm at the Inn on the Green, Broughton Gifford.

August Group Ride – 17^th August (now not followed by a Bar-B-Q)

WaBAM Update – May 2008

 

 

WaBAM AGM – Saturday 24th May

Everyone is cordially invited to attend the AGM this Saturday at the Police HQ in Devizes – 10:30 for an 11:00 start.  There will be some changes in the committee and our new president, Chief Inspector Ian Copas (a keen biker) will be there to say a few words.

 

As usual, the AGM will be followed by a ride-out lead by Martyn Buckland, so why not come along and support the club and then go for a ride.

 

Annual Subscriptions

There are still a few members who have not renewed their WaBAM membership for 2008/9.  At only £1 a month, WaBAM membership is definitely good value, so if you haven’t got around to renewing yet, this is just a gentle reminder.

 

 

Swindon Speedway – Thursday 29th May

This is an evening event and we are planning to ride out from the Chippenham Little Chef at 18:00, with me leading the way to the Blunsden stadium in Swindon.

 

Monthly Social – Saturday 1^st @ 8pm

If we are lucky it may even be warm enough to sit outside for a change.  Come along and meet up for a drink and a chat.

 

 

WaBAM Long Way Up – 6^th to 8^th June 2008 – Weekend in Derbyshire

There are currently 12 people signed up for this event, most of whom have now booked their accommodation in or around Alstonefield, from camping to luxury hotels.

WaBAM is attending two promotional events this summer for which we would like to enlist your help, even if just for a couple of hours, on the IAM/WaBAM stalls where we hope to recruit some new associates.  The dates for your diary are:

 

• 21/22^nd - June at the Southwest BMF show – Shepton Mallet – helpers entry fees will be refunded.
• 19^th July – Calne Bike Day – funnily enough, in Calne

WaBAM Update - May 2008

 

 

 

Membership Subscriptions 2008/9

It’s that time of year again, with subs due this month for 2008/9 membership.  I sent out forms and SAE’s to all members not already paying by standing order, so if you haven’t returned it yet, now is the time to get either the standing order form or a cheque for £12 in the post. 

If you do not intend re-joining, it would be really helpful if you could let me know why so that we can understand where the group might need to be improved.

 

April Group Ride – Sunday 20th - Wales

Will be a repeat (by request) of the ride Peter Hawkes lead in June 2006.  Going to Abergavenny via the Usk back road for breakfast/petrol/look at bikes/whatever, then up the Gospel Valley past Llanthony Priory, ending up in Hay on Wye for Lunch.  Back over a Toll Bridge (10p per bike, but Peter might pick up the tab for all as he did in 06!) to Hereford, then Monmouth and the Wye Valley to Tintern.  Run ends at Tintern Abbey to avoid another crocodile up the M4.

 

Every type of paved road will be used from a short a stretch of Motorway (consistent with making time as possible) to dual carriageways, A and B roads and one that has neither name nor number, but is possibly the star of the run - and it has the potential to wreak havoc in both a claustrophobic and an agoraphobic.  Over bridges (modern suspension, chain and wooden), past a windmill flying a Jolly Roger, via ancient Ecclesiastical sites, and a lunch stop at the world capital of books.  And a piece of modern idiocy, a car park that charges 50p per hour for bikes.

 

Monthly Social – Saturday 3^rd May – 8pm

It’s great to see so many people coming along to our monthly social events at the King Alfred, so if you haven’t been, why not join us next month.

WaBAM AGM – 10th or 31st May – still TBC

Due to date clashes and problems securing our preferred venue, this year’s AGM has been postponed until May.  The draft calling notice is in the latest issue of Exhaust Notes which can be downloaded from the WaBAM web site.  So the final date for the AGM is still to be confirmed.

WaBAM at the movies – 10^th May

We’re off to a special Screening of the cult movie Freebird which is only on for one night, with an introduction and Q&A session by the director John Ivay.  The film lasts 93 minutes and doors open 7pm. (Contains strong language and drug use). http://www.freebirdmovie.com/

Tour de Wiltshire 2008 – Sunday 29^th June

WaBAM members have been invited to take part in the Tour de Wiltshire 2008 - The Follies and Fords Run & Social, organised by the Wiltshire Trail Riders Fellowship, in aid of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

 

There are three classes, one of which is suitable for bikes fitted with road tyres.

WaBAM Annual Bar-B-Q – 17^th August

This year’s bar-b-q will be at the same venue (Savernake Forest) on 17^th August.  It will immediately follow the monthly group ride and families are more than welcome to join us in the forest at 2pm.  More details nearer the time.

 

WaBAM Trip to France/Belgium/Germany – 10^th – 16^th September

Rob’s plans for a 2008 trip to Europe are now coming together, with dates in September looking favourite and several people already signed up to go.   Crossing the channel - Portsmouth/Caen, followed by a two day ride through France and Belgium (avoiding motorways where possible), via the Nurburgring to a biker friendly hotel in Winterburg.

WaBAM - March Update 2008

 

 

March Group Ride – this Sunday - 16^th March

The March Group ride will be led by Malcolm Eaglesham.  He’ll be heading down to the south coast somewhere.   Meet at the Little Chef Chippenham @ 09:00 for a 09:30 start. 

 

Monthly Social – Saturday 5^th April

We had another excellent turn out on 1^st March at the King Alfred, so why not come along in April and meet up with some of the other members over a pint.

 

Southwest Regional Bikesafe – 12th & 13th April

After an excellent event at Cheltenham last year, WaBAM is planning to visit this years Bikesafe Southwest at Sparkford on 12^th & 13^th April.  If you are interested in riding down in a group, please get in touch.

 

April Group Ride – 20^th April

Peter Hawkes will be leading a ride to somewhere interesting, so keep this date free in your diary.  Usual time – usual place.

 

WaBAM AGM – 10th or 31st May - TBC

Due to date clashes and problems securing our preferred venue, this year’s AGM has been postponed until May.  The draft calling notice is in this month’s issue of Exhaust Notes which can be downloaded from the WaBAM web site.  Final date to be confirmed.

We are currently investigating a new Biker film called Freebird which is showing now on limited release (http://www.freebirdmovie.com/). Once we find a local venue we plan to organise a group viewing.  Definitely not in the back row though!!

Membership Subscriptions

In an attempt to streamline the admin associated with membership renewals we will be sending letters out over the next week inviting those members who have historically paid by cash or cheque to pay directly into the WaBAM membership account.  This letter will also include a GiftAid form which will allow members to increase the amount of money the group receives by getting a refund from the tax man.

Ken has been busy putting together a new course for budding Observer and Senior Observers for the 2008 season. Look at the Coaching page and click on the Training button to view the schedule. February Group Ride –  this Sunday - 17^th Feb 2008

The February Group ride will be led by yours truly.  We’ll be heading across country to Weston Super Mare and back via a circuitous route.   Meet at the Little Chef Chippenham @ 09:00 for a 09:30 start.  For people living at the Bath end, we will rendezvous with you at the Batheaston car park at 10:15 (ish).

 

Monthly Social – Saturday 1^st March 2008

After a great turn out for the February quiz night, it would be good to see a few more faces at the regular social evenings.  Come along to the King Alfred for a drink and a chat.

 

March Group Ride – 16^th March 2008

Details are still patchy, but we will be meeting up at the usual place, so keep your tank full and your diary free!

Rob is always looking for volunteers to lead rides throughout the year.  So go on – you know you want to!  We’ve even produced a guide on how to do it and having done it a couple of times myself now, I can vouch for the fact that as long as you don’t stop, nobody behind has the foggiest idea that you are lost!! J

 

 

Extra Rides in the Summer?

I'm afraid the feedback on this subject last month was a big fat ZERO! . . . . . . . .

 

So if there is no interest we’ll shelve the idea. . . . . . . However, thinking about it further, we were wondering if members who are already considering riding to events such as motorcycle races (Moto GP, WSB, BSB), shows (BMF, Beaulieu), etc. might consider inviting other interested people along.  This could be arranged informally on the WaBAM members forum.

 

Your feedback on this idea will be gratefully received.

WaBAM January 2008 Update

  

Mike Cummin – Sad News

Many of you will know Mike Cummin, one of our Observers, and will know that he survived a cardiac arrest last February.  He made a full and astonishing recovery from that, helped by his amazing fitness and the efforts of the staff at the leisure centre, where he collapsed, and the Cardiac Care and ITU teams at the RUH, and not least the love and support of his family.

 

So it was with enormous sadness and shock that we heard that Mike had suddenly and unexpectedly died on the night of Tuesday 8 January. 

 

His funeral will be held on Friday 18th January, 11.30a.m. at Weston Methodist Church, Bath, followed by buffet lunch at the church, with the committal at the crematorium for close family only at 3.00p.m.  Viv has said that there is no dress code, and that she and her girls will not be wearing black - anyone attending should wear what they feel comfortable and appropriate in.

 

If you are able to attend, please note that parking is very difficult in that area and you will need to allow time for this.  Arriving by bike may simplify matters here. 

 

We will remember especially his perpetual 'can-do' attitude and determination to make the best of everything.  He was a committed motorcyclist and used his post Naval training to become a professional bike trainer, so that he could pass on both his skills and enthusiasm to a new generation of bikers.  We will miss him.

Monthly Social – Saturday February 2^nd – WaBAM Quiz Night

 

Come on folks, put those thinking caps on ‘cos the February social is going to be a quiz night.  It would certainly be good to see you there, and it’s got to be better than washing your hair on a Saturday night!! 

 

We have not arranged food on this occasion, but the King Alfred will do ad-hoc meals if you would like to eat.  Entry will cost the princely sum of £1 per head and there will be a prize for the winner.

 

February Group Ride – Sunday February 17^th – Destination TBA

I have volunteered to lead the February group ride to somewhere and then back again, stopping for lunch, coffees, and stragglers etc.  More details in next month’s update and on the web site?

Articles for the Newsletter

Although not swamped with articles for the newsletter, we have had one or two sent through recently and these will appear in the future issues.  Martyn Jeffries would welcome any bike related material, no matter how old or how obscure.  With over 100 members on the books there must be loads of people out there with interesting stories to tell, and we’ll even accept hand written stuff.
